How Dental Hygiene Impacts Your Overall Health

Oral conditions can have significant impacts on your overall health. Our bodies contain millions of microorganisms, and our mouths are no exception. Your mouth is swarming with good bacteria that help break down your food. Though most oral bacteria are harmless, some microorganisms can cause various diseases, especially if they enter the bloodstream from the mouth. This generally happens when you have severe cavities or other problems which encourage the bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

The Association between Oral Health and Overall Health

Good oral health reflects overall general health. Poor oral health can indicate problems in the rest of the body. For instance, lesions in the mouth may signal an HIV infection; bleeding gums may indicate a possible blood disorder. Lower jawbone loss may be early symptoms of skeletal osteoporosis, and tooth loss can reflect an eating disorder.

The Effects of Dental Diseases

  • Diabetes

Patients who have diabetes are at an increased risk of developing gum diseases, as weakened body immunity cannot fight the infections. More advanced forms of gum disease are present in diabetic patients.

  • Cardiovascular Disease

The infections caused by oral bacteria are also considered responsible for the blockage of arteries.

  • Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis disease will weaken the bones in the body and lead to periodontal jawbone and tooth loss. The drugs used to treat osteoporosis also pose a minor risk to the jawbone.

  • Endocarditis

Endocarditis is an infection of the heart chambers' inner linings, spread through the bloodstream. It is caused by germs and bacteria which may originate from your mouth.

  • Pneumonia

Oral bacteria can also make their way through your lungs, causing respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.

How to Care for Your Oral Health?

The easiest way to ward off oral health issues is to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. It includes brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day to remove food debris that breeds harmful bacteria.

In addition to practicing good oral hygiene, you need to keep up with your regular dental visits to make sure your oral health is in peak condition. Do not neglect a toothache or gum inflammations as it may be an early sign of an oral health problem that needs to be addressed promptly.
