Endodontics

Are you suffering from excessive tooth decay, extreme tooth sensitivity, pimples on your gums, or sharp pain in the tooth while chewing? There are chances that your root canal is infected. The best way to get the situation treated is by getting a root canal treatment to prevent the infection from becoming advanced and would need surgery for removal. The dentistry division that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of root canal-related diseases and infections is called endodontics.

A root canal treatment involves removing the infected or the irritated part of the tooth root and cleaning it out to ensure optimum oral health. The treatment primarily treats problems affecting the pulp as its infection can result in increased sensitivity, constant pain, visible injury, or swelling.

When does a root canal treatment is required?

Dentists usually suggest root canal treatment if you suffer from any of these conditions:

  • Extreme tooth Decay
  • Accidental trauma or fracture
  • Deep infection
  • Dead tooth nerve

Signs of inflamed or infected pulp

Here are the signs that indicate the inflammation or infection of the pulp:

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Severe toothache
  • Pain while chewing
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling, tenderness, or redness of the gums around the tooth

If these symptoms are evident, it is important to seek treatment for the diseased pulp.

Root Canal treatment procedure

The root canal treatment starts with the dentist offering local anesthesia to numb down the area around which the procedure is going to be conducted. A rubber sheet called the rubber dam is then placed around the tooth to keep the tooth dry and saliva-free. Then, the dentist will drill into the affected tooth to reach the decayed parts. The pulp, along with bacteria and decayed nerve tissue, is cleaned out, and a water jet is used for flushing away debris. The hole that was drilled will then be closed using a tooth-colored sealant. A tooth restoration like an artificial crown may be required if a major part of the tooth was damaged due to decay.

Root canal treatments are effective solutions that help get rid of toothache and infection and manage to keep the surrounding teeth and gums safe. So, if you have tooth sensitivity or toothache, give us a call or schedule an appointment online.
